Get off to the best start

Employers can often suffer from a syndrome called “buyers remorse” after making an offer of employment. This is because they have stuck their own reputation on the line in hiring you and there is always the possibility that an expensive mistake has been made in hiring the wrong person. Probationary periods offer an opportunity for both parties to evaluate each other.

Ok you have got the job that you wanted and you want to get off to the best start possible?

Pacifying your new employer as quickly as possible is always a good idea. You can start this immediately after receiving the offer and before you start work. Here are a few ideas of initiatives that you can take.

1.   Send your new employer an email, thanking them for providing you with the opportunity and assuring them that you will not let them down. Explain that you are looking forward to working for the company, in the role and with them as an individual.

2.   Ask your new employer if there is anything that you can do prior to starting with them in preparation for your new role. Research, refreshing skills, popping into see them etc. (most employers will say no, but the offer to do something like this makes a massive impression)

3.   Arrive at least 15 minutes early and work at least 15 minutes late as often as possible  through the probation period.

4.   Never book a holiday in your first 3 months of employment (the odd day is not usually a problem).

5.   Make a list of questions and observations in your first month and take a pro active approach to your development in the role.

6.   Don’t be afraid to ask how you are doing. Appraisals often don’t take place until the end of a probation period.

7.   Speak to your manager or to an F10 representative about any concerns that you have. Do not let issues fester and frustrate you.
