Career History Summary
Ian is a chartered engineer with a proven track record of success within commercial engineering, business development & management. He has over 25years experience gained in a wide variety of hi-tech fields including telecommunications, mobile, cellular & satellite comms, test & measurement, security / TSCM, military applications, microwave technology & aerospace.
He currently manages a hardware engineering team within the payload equipment group of Astrium Satellites, responsible for the design of digital signal processors, security units and various science equipments suitable for spaceflight.
Within the SME sector he has held board level roles at both Audiotel International and Smith Myers Communications where he successfully managed technology development, culture change and ultimate business growth within the broad RF communications and security markets.
During his early career, he served a 4 year graduate apprenticeship with British Aerospace & Hatfield Polytechnic (now UoH) working on aircraft and missile systems. Upon graduation he held several design roles with MaCom and then Marconi Instruments working on microwave frequency synthesiser systems for the defence market through to radio test and measurement systems before joining Smith Myers Communications.
Key Achievements
· Management of key satellite engineering programmes
· New revolutionary sweep tool (DetectIV) introduced to TSCM market in 2004
· Successful design & introduction of CellSyncTM – cellular radio synchronisation equipment - 1996
· Worked on the development of the highly acclaimed 2955 Radio Test Set that attained the Queen’s Award for Industry whilst at Marconi Instruments ~ 1988
Personal interests and Hobbies
Music, gardening, amateur radio and wine making.
Trivia: What would you say is the most interesting thing about you? Or to happen to you?
I’m an old Rock n’Roller who will not give up! I perform regularly in 2 cover bands playing rock, blues and soul covers to pub and club audiences.
